When the La Grange High School Band was granted a once in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City in March 2025, the invitation was nothing short of a testament to the local art program’s dedication and talent.
However, ensuring that every student could afford the trip presented a financial challenge. Recognizing this need, individual members of the La Grange community came together to use the Greater Fayette Community Foundation as a vehicle to raise the necessary funds and make this dream a reality.
Joe Bailey, a key figure in the fundraising effort, recalled how the idea came to life and said, “The Director of the La Grange High School Band spoke at our La Grange Noon Lion’s Club meeting about the invitation and the challenge of raising $150,000 for the trip. With less than $50,000 raised, a few of us decided to help. We set up a special donation account at the Greater Fayette Community Foundation to ensure tax deductibility and proper fund distribution.”
Bill Bishop, another major donor, reflected on the process saying, “Charity isn’t always easy. When we learned the band had a chance to play at Carnegie Hall, we knew it was a wonderful opportunity, but the financial aspect was daunting. The Greater Fayette Community Foundation saved us by quickly setting up a fund where all donations would be tax-deductible and dedicated to the trip.”
The fundraising effort quickly gained momentum, with local businesses, families, and alumni rallying in support. Donations poured in, and fundraising events were organized to bring in additional funds. The spirit of generosity that La Grange is known for was on full display, ensuring that every student had the opportunity to take part in this remarkable experience.
“Through personal donations and outreach, we raised $40,000, helping secure full funding for the trip,” Bailey said.
“This success is a testament to the band, the school district, and the generosity of our community.” Bishop added, “Because of this, La Grange students will experience Central Park, eat a New York bagel, and perform in one of the world’s great halls. Play well, Mighty Leopard Band! And say yes to the cream cheese.”
Thanks to the dedication and generosity of the La Grange community, the Mighty Leopard Band took the stage at Carnegie Hall, and represented their school and hometown with pride.
The band members and their families are filled with gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received. This opportunity would not have been possible without the collective efforts of local donors, supporters, and GFCF’s commitment to ‘Helping Others Help Others.’
This journey was a transformative experience for the students and a defining moment for the entire La Grange community, showcasing the power of collective effort and generosity.
Play well, Mighty Leopard Band. La Grange is cheering you on!
