2024 Recap: How the Bailey Scholarship is Opening Doors for First-Generation Students

In 2024, the Greater Fayette Community Foundation proudly assisted in the continuing education of 33 local students from our rural region.

The Joe & Carolyn Bailey Scholarship was established to support students in their pursuit of higher education by providing financial assistance to first-generation students from Flatonia High School.

Over the years, this scholarship has opened doors for 16 students, helping them achieve their educational goals and expand their career opportunities.

“These scholarships were not just free money to us. Instead, they were seen as the opportunity to do something to improve because these donors believed in us and, more importantly, in who we could become,” said Trista Alvarado, a past recipient.

Trista Alvarado was among the 2022 outstanding recipients, earning recognition for her dedication to both academics and community service. Born and raised in Flatonia, Texas, she grew up on her family’s property, deeply rooted in Fayette County.

As a first-generation college student, she was determined to pursue higher education and sought out scholarships to make her dream a reality.

“My desire to obtain a college degree was the momentum I used to apply for local scholarships to turn my goal into reality. I discovered the Joe and Carolyn Bailey Scholarship, and I applied instantly,” she shared.

The moment she received the award was one of immense gratitude and excitement, reinforcing her belief that hard work and perseverance lead to great opportunities.

Through summer follow-ups with the Senior Director of Community Engagement, Ashleigh Parks, Alvarado expressed interest in gaining professional experience while home for the summer. In 2024, she was offered an internship with GFCF, where she worked closely with senior staff to understand the importance of relationship-building and community engagement.

Throughout her internship, she contributed to meaningful projects, developed effective communication skills, and deepened her appreciation for the power of community-led initiatives.

“I have been fortunate not only to be a recipient of this scholarship but also to complete a summer internship with the Foundation. These experiences have equipped me with valuable skills and deepened my appreciation for the power of community-led initiatives,” she said. Her ability to adapt and learn quickly made a lasting impression on her mentors.

Alvarado’s scholarship and internship experience not only provided financial and professional support but also fostered tremendous personal growth. After her first year of college, she felt a strong desire to give back and began researching what it would take to start her own scholarship fund.

“After the passing of Carolyn Bailey in late 2024, this dream of mine has been pushed even further. Carolyn believed in academia and, even more so, in allowing students to have the same encouragement and opportunity that she received, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of their aspirations. The motto of the Greater Fayette Community Foundation is ‘Helping Others Help Others,’ and that has become evident in my life. My dream is for others to have that same opportunity,” she shared.

Looking ahead, she plans to continue in occupational therapy while advocating for accessibility to education, using her experiences to build a foundation for her future scholarship program.

The Joe & Carolyn Bailey Scholarship has not only shaped her future but also ignited a passion for helping others succeed.
