In rural communities like Lockhart, Texas, distance doesn’t just separate towns, it separates kids from opportunity.
For many families, especially those with multiple kids or demanding work schedules, getting their children to a sports practice or tournament isn’t just inconvenient, it can be impossible. And in rural Texas, where venues are often an hour away, a single missed ride can mean a season left behind.
But thanks to support from the Rural Community Health Fund, one small grant helped launch a big idea: Stride Forward Transit, a transportation program created by Lion’s Legacy Academy to ensure every child in their service area, regardless of zip code or income, has a way to show up and play.
A Ride Toward Possibility
With a grant of $5,000 from RCHF, Lion’s Legacy Academy piloted Stride Forward Transit with the Lockhart Warriors youth basketball team. What started as a few van rentals quickly grew into something more powerful. Kids weren’t just getting to practice—they were showing up with pride. They were winning games. Building friendships. Traveling to tournaments. Even cheering at a professional basketball game for the first time.
Then came football season. With donated tickets and new partnerships, Stride Forward Transit expanded to the CFPO youth football league—getting kids to a college game at Texas State University. For many, it was their first time setting foot on a campus. And in that moment, the dream of college didn’t feel so far away.
Behind Every Ride: A Story of Equity
Every van trip revealed the same barriers:
- Parents working multiple shifts or managing several kids across different activities
- Families living in remote areas without reliable transportation
- Long commutes—often over an hour each way—to reach practice or game locations
What’s clear: Talent isn’t limited by geography. But access often is.
Stride Forward Transit was never just about rides; it’s about what happens when kids are given a chance to show up, compete, and belong.
Where the Road Leads Next
Over the past year, the program completed 12 separate van rentals. Each one was a temporary fix to a permanent challenge. Now, Lion’s Legacy Academy is raising funds for a used passenger van to ensure the program’s sustainability and growth. Owning a vehicle would mean more consistent service, broader reach, and year-round support for young athletes across Caldwell County and beyond.
This spring, they’ll host a Community Kite Day, offering free rides from rural towns like Dale, TX. They’re also launching a survey to better understand rural transportation gaps, ensuring future solutions are shaped by real community voices.
You Can Be the Key
Stride Forward Transit is proof that when we invest in access, we unlock potential.
With continued donor support, this program can grow beyond van rentals and seasonal rides. It can become a permanent bridge to confidence, connection, and brighter futures for kids in rural Texas.
