Some acts of generosity are highly visible. Others quietly create opportunities that can ripple through a community for years.
Recently, an anonymous donor worked with Greater Fayette Community Foundation to help two therapists at La Grange Counseling Center pursue specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR.
For Jamie Nichols, LCSW, and Christine Norwood, LPCA, the gift provided an opportunity to gain new skills they could bring directly back to the people they serve in La Grange.
The donor chose to remain anonymous. The impact of the gift, however, is already beginning to be felt in the community.
Bringing Specialized Trauma Care Closer to Home
EMDR is a trauma-focused psychotherapy used to help people process traumatic experiences and is an evidence-based treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
During EMDR therapy, an individual works with a trained mental health professional to process traumatic memories while engaging in guided bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or sounds. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs identifies EMDR as a trauma-focused psychotherapy for PTSD, and it is also included in treatment guidance from organizations including the American Psychological Association and World Health Organization.
Access to professionals with specialized training can be especially meaningful in rural communities, where behavioral health resources may be more limited and residents can face additional barriers to finding specialized care.
That is what makes investing in local professionals so powerful. Instead of requiring residents to look elsewhere for every specialized service, building the skills of professionals who are already serving the community can help strengthen the network of care available closer to home.
On May 29, Nichols and Norwood traveled to Dallas to begin the first portion of their EMDR training. Nichols shared that meeting their trainer, Jen Shotwell, and the training staff immediately gave them confidence in the experience ahead. Nichols and Norwood shared, “Jen Shotwell is so knowledgeable and was able to convey both the science of EMDR and her passion for helping others process trauma.”
After three days of training, Nichols and Norwood returned to La Grange Counseling Center with new tools they could begin incorporating into their work. Nichols shared, “Christine and I came back to the La Grange Counseling Center equipped with new skills to continue to help members of our community process trauma and improve mental health.”
Their development did not stop when the first training session ended. As they began implementing what they learned, the therapists planned to complete 10 hours of supervision to continue refining their skills. They were also scheduled to return for the second portion of the training in August, with a focus on using EMDR with unique populations.
This ongoing learning process helps turn a one-time charitable gift into something much bigger: an investment in the skills, knowledge, and capacity of professionals serving the community.
An Investment That Can Reach Beyond Two Therapists
The impact of this gift is not limited to two people attending a training.
The knowledge Nichols and Norwood gain can become part of the care they provide to clients over time, strengthening their ability to work with people navigating trauma and related mental health challenges. And according to Nichols, they began seeing the value of that training quickly, “It has been amazing to already see our community benefit from this training.”
That is an important part of the story.
When philanthropy invests in local capacity, the benefit can continue long after the original gift is made. A donor can help equip a professional with knowledge that may be applied again and again as they serve individuals and families in the community.
For Nichols and Norwood, the opportunity has also carried personal meaning. They shared, “We can’t express enough what a blessing it is to be able to gain these skills and bring them back to La Grange. Thank you SO MUCH for making this a possibility.”
When a Donor’s Interests Meet a Community Need
This story also illustrates an important role Greater Fayette Community Foundation can play in local philanthropy.
Sometimes donors know exactly which organization they want to support. Sometimes they know the issue they care about but need help identifying an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. And sometimes they simply want to help without becoming the center of the story.
GFCF can help connect charitable intent with opportunities for local impact.
Through relationships with nonprofits, community leaders, service providers, and residents, the Foundation can help donors better understand local needs and explore thoughtful ways to respond.
That might mean supporting a nonprofit, responding to an emerging need, investing in professional development, establishing a charitable fund, or making a direct gift like the one that helped Nichols and Norwood pursue EMDR training.
Donors can also choose to remain anonymous.
Generosity does not have to come with public recognition to create meaningful change.
Giving That Goes Further
For this donor, the story is not about having a name attached to a gift.
It is about what that gift made possible.
Two local therapists gained access to specialized professional development. Those therapists returned to La Grange with new skills. And those skills can now become part of the support available to people in the community who are working through trauma and seeking better mental health.
One donation helped strengthen local capacity to care for others.
That is the power of connecting donors to causes.
