Put Your Generosity Into Motion: DAF Day 2026

On October 8, DAF Day brings donors, nonprofits, and charitable organizations together around one goal: helping charitable dollars reach the causes and communities that need them. For donors who want to give more intentionally, a Donor Advised Fund can provide a flexible way to turn generosity into lasting impact.

There is often a space between wanting to make a difference and knowing where to begin.

You may know that you want to support your community. You may have causes you care deeply about. You may even be thinking about how charitable giving fits into your financial or legacy plans.

The next question is often the most important:

What kind of impact do you want to make?

At Greater Fayette Community Foundation, that question is where many donor conversations begin.

And this October, DAF Day offers an opportunity to move that conversation into action.

What is DAF Day?

October 8, 2026 is DAF Day, the third annual national day of action dedicated to increasing awareness, adoption, and grantmaking through Donor Advised Funds. The initiative brings donors, nonprofits, and DAF providers together to encourage charitable dollars to move to the causes that matter most.

At its core, DAF Day is about accelerating charitable giving at a time when nonprofit organizations are navigating significant funding pressures. The national initiative encourages donors to put charitable resources already committed for giving to work for organizations serving their communities.

For current DAF holders, October 8 is a timely opportunity to recommend a grant.

For someone who has been considering a more intentional approach to philanthropy, it can also be a reason to learn more about whether a DAF is the right fit.

What is a Donor Advised Fund?

A Donor Advised Fund, or DAF, is a charitable giving account.

A donor contributes cash or other eligible assets to the fund, receives the applicable charitable tax benefit when the contribution is made, and can recommend grants to eligible nonprofits over time. Funds may also be invested while they remain in the account.

The result is a giving vehicle that can help donors organize their philanthropy and think more intentionally about when, where, and how they want to give.

And the provider you choose matters.

For donors interested in place based philanthropy, community foundations can offer something especially valuable: knowledge of the community itself. Community foundations can be a strong fit for donors who want their giving and charitable assets connected to a particular place.

That is where GFCF’s role as a local guide becomes important.

Your Giving Starts With Your Goals

Opening a DAF with GFCF does not begin with choosing a nonprofit from a list.

It begins with a conversation.

In an initial meeting with GFCF CEO Susannah Mikulin, donors are invited to think about a foundational question:

What kind of impact do you want to make?

Maybe you already know exactly which organizations or causes you want to support. Maybe you have a broad interest in education, health, economic opportunity, or strengthening the community where you live. Or maybe you simply know that you want your charitable giving to make a meaningful difference locally.

GFCF can help you explore those goals while sharing insight into needs and opportunities across the communities we serve.

From there, one or two follow up conversations with Susannah can help clarify your giving goals and determine the next steps for establishing your fund.

You do not have to arrive with every answer. Through our conversations with you, we will help you to clarify your goals, values, and giving priorities.

Why Now?

DAF Day is one day, but the larger opportunity is ongoing.

Charitable resources can have the greatest meaning when they move from intention into action.

For donors who already have a DAF, October 8 can be a reminder to consider the organizations and causes that could benefit from your support now.

For donors who are just beginning to explore charitable planning, it can be the start of a larger conversation about the impact you want your generosity to have.

And for GFCF, it is another opportunity to do what we do every day: connect people who want to give with the needs, ideas, and organizations strengthening our rural communities.
